Salt water is highly corrosive, and even small amounts of trapped moisture or salt crystals can lead to stubborn leaks or damage over time.

The good news? It only takes a few minutes, and it makes a massive difference in how long your housing stays reliable and crystal-clear.

Here’s the exact after-dive maintenance routine we recommend at Salted Line:

1. Rinse Thoroughly in Fresh Water

As soon as possible after your dive - ideally within the first 5-10 minutes - rinse the entire housing under running fresh water or rinse thoroughly in a container of fresh water. Make sure to press all buttons and dials while rinsing so water can flush out any salt from the moving parts. This single step removes the majority of corrosive salt before it has a chance to dry and crystallize.

2. Blow Out Water from All Crevices

Even after rinsing, water can hide in hard-to-reach places. Use compressed air (from a dive shop compressor or portable can) or a strong blower bulb to gently blow out trapped water from:

• Button shafts and control levers
• Dial grooves
• Port bayonet area
• Viewfinder eyecup
• Any other small gaps and seams around the housing

This step is often overlooked, but it prevents hidden moisture from causing corrosion or pressure issues on your next dive.

3. Dry Completely

Wipe the housing with a clean paper towel or any other clean towel to remove excess water, then let it air-dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Never store your housing while it’s still wet or even slightly damp. A little patience here goes a long way - proper drying is one of the best ways to prevent long-term issues.

Pro Tips for Even Better Results

• If you’re on a multi-day trip, consider giving the housing a final rinse with distilled water at the end of the trip - it leaves zero mineral residue.
• Store the housing with the back plate slightly open (or removed) in a dry bag or case to allow air circulation.
• Avoid leaving the housing in a hot car or direct sun after diving - heat can bake salt residues into the seals.
• If not using the housing for an extended period, remove the all main (backplate, port) O-rings and store it separately in a plastic bag.
