We often receive messages from creators asking about the most efficient way to manage camera battery life during a dive. Whether you use the regular Sea Frogs waterproof camera housing or the advanced Salted Line underwater camera housing, relying on the physical ON/OFF switch can sometimes slow down your shooting workflow. Here is why many professional underwater photographers choose to use the camera's built-in Sleep Mode instead.

Instant Readiness and Speed

When capturing marine life, every second counts. Using the Power Saving Option (Sleep Mode) generally allows the camera to wake up almost instantly the moment you half-press the shutter button. A cold start via the mechanical ON/OFF switch takes noticeably longer, which means you could potentially miss a fast-moving subject like a shark or a manta ray.

Maximizing Battery Life

Modern cameras actually handle power consumption exceptionally well through Sleep Mode. By configuring the power-saving timer, your screen and sensor will automatically power down after shooting and instantly reactivate the moment you press the shutter."

How to Set Up Sleep Mode on Sony Cameras

For most Sony cameras (such as the Sony A6700, A7 IV, or FX3), setting this up is very straightforward. You can usually configure the timer to 10 seconds, 1, 2, 5, or 30 minutes according to your preference.

Navigate through your camera settings using this path:
MENU - Setup (Toolbox icon) - Power Setting Option - Power Save Start Time.

Please note that on older Sony models, the Toolbox icon is located at the top of the screen, whereas on newer menus, it is situated on the left side. By setting this up once, you can potentially make your underwater shooting experience much smoother and keep your gear in top condition for years.
